‘You carry this weight trying to cover your mistakes, to make it seem like nothing could ever break you’. Palavras de Jesse Leach sobre o cantar, com um toque mais pessoal em “I Am Broken Too”, título este que ele agora tem tatuado no seu braço.

Começo esta análise com uma referência a que parece ser interessante o facto de que muitos álbuns e músicas que parecem “falar” comigo acabam por ser álbuns que lidam com dor, frustração, raiva e profunda melancolia e, assim que vou pesquisar sobre o álbum, descubro que alguém da banda enfrentou algo na sua vida, algo menos bom. Neste caso, foi um baque no meu coração… aquilo que o vocalista desta banda, Jesse Leach passou não foi pêra doce. Atingiu-me. Conheço a banda há  algum tempo mas, nunca pesquisei nada sobre os membros da banda e porque tiveram entretanto outro vocalista.

Um retorno à banda após uma década colocado em risco por um problema na garganta, que foi felizmente tratado com uma cirurgia. Um divórcio doloroso. Uma depressão. O pior de tudo “bloqueio de escritor” e uma forte falta de confiança em si mesmo. Tudo isto me fala, tem um profundo significado e identifico-me imenso com as letras e a música.  Foi-lhe dada uma segunda hipótese na vida e ela foi agarrada com toda a garra possível. Um profundo respeito e admiração, porque saiu daqui um álbum fenomenal, principalmente do ponto de vista vocal. 

Agora, passando ao álbum em si, a banda, que vem do underground norte americano do metal/hardcore lança este oitavo álbum na já sua longa carreira, pela mão da Metal Blade Records, e mostram-nos que os demónios também saem à rua para dançarem e cantarem sobre as nossas sepulturas e que nada nem ninguém para esta banda. 

Com um começo impiedoso com “Unleashed”, que dita o tom do álbum, muitos riffs violentos e furiosos, bateria quase que com ritmo tribal e berros de deliciar os fãs de “screamo”. Depois atiram-nos com a “The Signal Fire” e desfazem-nos com berros agressivos (ah que felicidade), bateria carregada de fúria, baixo forte e guitarras ritmadas e velozes. Com a bateria voltam a fazer o mesmo na “Ravenous” (sim é mesmo voraz) e na “As Sure As The Sun Will Rise”.

No que toca a convidados, nesta, “The Signal Fire” têm como convidado Howard Jones dos Light The Torch e ainda na “The Crownless King” têm, para nossa alegria, Chuck Billy dos Testament e, como não podia deixar de ser, o tema tem sonoridades “thrash” e então tendo a banda juntado estes dois vocalistas nada mais é do que uma descarga de adrenalina em forma musical.

O momento carinhoso do álbum está em “I Am Broken Too”, que lida com a depressão e a saúde mental e temos aqui um momento mais melodioso do vocalista, mas este tom conjuga-se bem com a mensagem. Aproveita-se para deixar a nota (já anteriormente partilhada pelo Not’Abaixo) de que parte dos lucros será doada para a Hope For The Day ou facebook Hope for The Day , uma organização sem fins lucrativos com sede em Chicago que desenvolve esforços na prevenção do suicídio, oferecendo consultas e apoio no âmbito da saúde mental através da música e da arte. 

Mais uma vez, não vou falar de todas as faixas, deixo essa tarefa para vocês, dado que, em último lugar são vocês que decidem o que acham na realidade do álbum…. Falo somente, somente da última faixa “Bite The Hand That Feeds”, que parece reunir o consenso comum da malta de que é brutalidade pura ou pura fúria musical, e, que aqueles instrumentos parecem entrar em combustão e então que dizer de Jesse? Ah céus! Que dizer daquele rosnar de palavras, principalmente “bite the hand that feeds”? Adorei aqui particularmente a vocalização e, felizes de nós por ter sido operado e ter superado o seu problema, para nos poder entregar esta orgia sonora em forma de voz. 

Temos também, para nosso contentamento, mais para o final do tema uns brutais “breakdowns” e “blastbeats” para nos lembrarmos que eles são também do "hardcore"…. E oiçam com esses ouvidinhos lindos aquela bestialidade de homem a dizer-nos dos 3 minutos aos 3.44: “Where do we go from here? // We won't go quietly // It must be the end of apathy // We let go of the grip of our sanity // What would you... What would you kill for?” e depois venham cá dizer se não vos fez estremecer e derreterem-se todos ou, como diz alguém que prezo muito, “até se apagam”?

Na realidade, do principio ao fim do álbum este homem berrou-me aos ouvidos e eu nem pestanejei. Adorei cada momento. É um álbum com sonoridades que nos pregam um soco na cara e nos gritam bem alto de que é um álbum feito por quem sabe e que faz isto já há algum tempo. Apesar de ser mais do mesmo, sim, pois não há exactamente uma evolução imensa, ao conhecermos a jornada de quem o produziu e o porquê de ter sido criado, o álbum ganha um nível emotivo e ressoa connosco de uma forma que assim não o seria se não soubéssemos da jornada da banda. E, honestamente isso é o mais importante aqui. A mensagem chegou e ficou. Aproveitem também para consultar o Facebook da banda para saberem datas de concertos na Europa, visto que os mesmo andam em digressão e vale muito a pena ir poder vê-los ao vivo: Killswitch Engage

I begin this review with a reference to what seems to be interesting to me the fact that many albums and songs that seem to "talk" to me turn out to be albums that deal with pain, frustration, anger and deep melancholy, and as soon as I go to research informations on the album, I find that someone in the band has faced something in their life, something less good. In this case, it touched my heart… what the singer of this band, Jesse Leach, went through was not easy no. It hit me. I follow the band for some time but I have never researched anything about the band members and for some time they had another singer in the band.

A return to the band after a decade was at risk because of a throat problem, which was fortunately treated with surgery. A painful divorce. A depression. Worst of all, “writer's block” and a strong lack of self-confidence. All this speaks to me, has deep meaning and I identify immensely with the lyrics and the music. It was given to him a second chance at life and that chance was grabbed with as much fierceness as it was possible. A great respect and admiration, because with that a phenomenal album was created, especially from the vocal point. 

Now, moving on to the album itself, the band, having roots on the north american underground and being parto of the genre metal/hardcore released this 8th album with the label from Metal Blade Records, and showed us that demons also come out to the streets to dance and sing on our graves and  that nothing and no one will stop this band.

With a ruthless start to "Unleashed," which sets the tone for the album, with many violent and furious riffs, drumming with almost tribal rhythm and with screams that will delight the "screamo" fans. Then they slap us in our faces with "The Signal Fire" and tear us apart with aggressive screams (oh what a bliss), furious drums, a strong bass and fast-paced guitars. With the drums they do the same again on “Ravenous” (yes it is really ravenous) and on “As Sure As The Sun Will Rise”.

In terms of guests, in this one, "The Signal Fire" has as guest Howard Jones of Light The Torch and  in "The Crownless King" we have, to our delight, Chuck Billy of the Testament and, of course, the theme has "thrashy" sounds and so having the band put together these two vocalists it is nothing more than a rush of adrenaline in musical form.

The soft moment of the album is in "I Am Broken Too", which deals with depression and mental health and here we have a more melodious moment of the singer, but this tone blends well with the message. I take the opportunity to leave the note (previously shared by Not'Abaixo) that part of the proceeds will be donated to Hope For The Day, a Chicago-based nonprofit that works to prevent suicide by offering mental health consultations and support through music and art.

Once again, I will not mention all the tracks, I leave this task to you, since, ultimately, it is you that decide what you think about the album's…. I speak only of the last track "Bite The Hand That Feeds", which seems to gather the common sensewith the audience that it is pure brutality or pure musical fury, and that those instruments seem to catch on fire and what to say about Jesse? Oh dear! What about the way he growls the words, especially “bite the hand that feeds”? I especially loved the vocalization here and we are lucky that he was operated on and overcome his problem so that he could deliver this orgy of a sound in the form of his voice.

We also have, to our delight, near the end of the theme some brutal breakdowns and blastbeats to remind us that they are also hardcore. And listen to those beautiful little ears that beastly man telling us from 3 minutes to 3.44: “Where do we go from here? // We won't go quietly // It must be the end of apathy // We will go the grip of our sanity // What would you ... What would you kill for?” And then come say to me if it didn’t made made you tremble and melt, or, as someone dearly to me says, “you blackout”?

In fact, from the beginning to end of the album this man shouted at my ears and I didn't even blink. I loved every moment. It's a powerfull album that punches us in the face and screams loudly that it's an album made by people who have been doing this for a while. Despite being more of the same, yes, because there is not exactly a huge evolution, knowing the journey of who produced it and why it was created, the album gains an emotional level and resonates with us in a way that would not if we didn't knew about the band's journey. And honestly that's the most important thing here. The message arrived and stayed.
